It’s no doubt Korea is turning fast into a coffee shop destination. The official stats say Koreans drink three times more coffee than the world average.
One would assume Korea is a tea land, and it was for some time. But the tea culture during the Joseon dynasty was not as exciting and sophisticated as in other Asian kingdoms. Coffee made its entry with the introduction to the American way of living. Like it or not, Starbucks was a catalyst in the development of the coffee culture of today.
There are so many coffee shops in Korea, so they inevitably need to innovate to stay in business continually. In Seoul, the biggest challenge is the steadily rising rent and areas of the city falling victim to new, trendy spots.
So if you are still lockdown home due to COVID19, here are some excellent ideas on how to “explore” beautiful city of Seoul without leaving the comfort of your home:
Jeju has a considerable advantage when it comes to coffee shops – fantastic nature and unobstructed views of the beautiful seashores. With travel restrictions due to the coronavirus, Jeju has become the top destination for domestic travel.
Here’s my list of fantastic coffee experiences that bland excellent coffee tastes with breathtaking views—perfect fusion for all senses.

Klein Blue | 클랭블루
The coffee shop is best known for its large window on the second floor that frames two of the wind turbines placed at the shore. Especially popular at sunset, so make sure you go early and line up to get on the bench in front of the window at the right time. The first and second floors have different vibes. The first floor is very bright and vibrant, with comfy furniture to enjoy your time in a good company. The second floor is more gallery-like, with very minimalistic furniture, but that big, fantastic window. Their tiramisu cake is delicious, so you might want to try that. They have excellent seating areas outside, so if the weather allows, that’s a good option too.

Prices: on the expensive side
VADADA | 바다다
Vadada is one of the first coffee shops I ever visited in Jeju back in 2017 during my first trip there. I was impressed, and still, I am. What stands out the most is the beautiful garden of the coffee shop, offering unobstructed views to the sea. There are various seating areas suitable for couples or bigger groups. The actual cafe building opens up to the garden which creates a very Mediterranian kind of feeling. Add to the picture a live chill-out and deep house DJ act, and you will end up spending hours here, especially if you are in a good company. Do not miss Vadada’s rooftop, where you can also chill and enjoy the sunset views. I did precisely that, and it’s a fantastic experience. Try their burgers too, not bad at all.

Blossom Jeju | 블라썸 제주
Just outside of Seogwipo, Blossom is a hidden gem. What I like about it: the cozy interior with leveled main cafe room, several small indoor areas, and a great garden with Fatboy style sitting arrangements. On a clear day, views of Halansan are suiting. Do not expect sea views; even from the rooftop, you will not be able to see the sea. Try the french toast, besides being very delicious; it’s very instagramable too. The coffee shop is not on the main path of coffee goers, so expect not to be too busy, something I like.

Honeymoon house | 허니문하우스
Yet another coffee shop with great views of the sea. For the best panoramas, don’t go for air-conditioning and sit outside. The coffeeshop is built in Spanish hacienda-style and is quite spacious, with big windows overseeing the sea and a beautiful pine forest nearby. The dessert selection is limited but made at the spot, so try their cookies and tiramisu together with aromatic cold Americano. The coffee shop is on the olleh walking trail, so after the coffee, take a walk along the shore to the famous Jeongbang Waterfalls

Gongbech | Gongbaek | 공백
It’s more than a coffee; it’s an art gallery with a neat mirror robot installation. The former warehouse building is converted into a clean, industrial gallery turning the building itself into art. The gray and white colors of the installation contrast with the grassy green yard and the ocean’s turquoise blue. The actual coffee shop is in newly built premises following the warehouse color scheme but adding a contrast – wide red benches to accommodate the thirsty visitors. White Fatboy seats are sparkled here and there outside on the grass, but securing a spot is tricky as everybody is waiting to chill on and spend indefinite time staring at the sea, chatting, and drinking coffee.

That’s just a short overview of what you can expect in terms of coffee shops when you visit Jeju. I’m sure there are many more exciting cafes with great design, amazing interior and delicious coffee drinks.
